Overview

Shopezy is a UK delivery platform for food, groceries and taxis: a customer app, a driver app, a web portal for the operations team and the cloud functions behind them. The platform was already live when I joined. I added live driver tracking from end to end, built new cloud functions and lower-cost store mapping, fixed long-standing bugs and performance problems in the driver app, and built new tools for the portal.

Live tracking server

Live driver locations for customers and staff

A real-time server that streams each driver’s position to the customer waiting for the order and to the operations team, instead of writing every location update to the database.

What I did

Drivers send their location over a WebSocket; a customer following an order or taxi trip sees the car move on the map as it happens
Every connection signs in with Firebase, and a customer can only follow their own order
Live driver positions are kept in Redis; full trip history, stops and idle time are stored in PostgreSQL
Learns from finished trips to predict arrival times
Supports batch deliveries, where one driver carries several orders and each customer follows the same car
Runs in Docker at track.shopezy.com, with automated tests run against production
